Marie Antoinette Tee - Black
Outward displays of wealth by musicians and athletes (or “new money” types in general) are often derided by the ruling class as being tacky and gaudy.
Historically, however, the ruling class were the ones who openly flaunted their wealth, led extravagant lifestyles, and looked down upon the have-nots – epitomized by the decadence of Marie Antoinette.
The ruling class of the modern age have been operating on a more nondescript codes of conduct. What remained the same is the disdain they have for the common people.
Before, it was because they didn’t much to show for, now, it is seen as distasteful if people with newly acquired moneydisplay their wealth visibly.
We wanted to explore the nature of this implicit class structure by using Marie Antoinette, an actual Queen of France, as our subject but with the treatment inspired by Cash Money/No Limit rap album covers – a conceptual reversal of Kehinde Wiley’s methods.
Furthermore, we wanted to amplify the absurdity and hypocrisy of her infamous “LET THEM EAT CAKE” quote by incorporating symbolic elements such as a burning gold guillotine, iced out cake, and an all gold carriage.
